On 10 November 2016, the Laos National Assembly approved a Law on Chemical Management. The law, which became effective on 12 December 2016, was established to improve chemical management in Laos for the safety of environment and health.
Based on the Law, Chemicals are divided into 4 classifications according to its hazard level as follows:
- Chemicals Type 1 (extremely dangerous)
- Chemicals Type 2 (highly dangerous)
- Chemicals Type 3 (moderately dangerous)
- Chemicals Type 4 (slightly dangerous)
The concept of Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for the classification and labelling of chemicals is included in the Law for future implementation.The law also requires labeling in Lao.
